Answering Your Questions
Does a doula replace nursing staff?
Never. A doula is not a medical provider or technician. As such, she should never provide any medical exams. A doula can enhance the care of the nursing staff by providing mother with information, continuous physical support, and a familiar face when the staff needs to change shifts or provide assistance to other patients.
Do you offer postpartum support at the hospital?
Yes. I remain with the birthing mother for an hour after delivery. During this time I can assist with initial breastfeeding, taking photos with clients phone/camera, grabbing snacks for mom and partner from the café, etc.
How do you deal with complications at birth?
I ensure that both the mother and partner understand the circumstance and their options. If they do not, I make sure to find a staff member to answer any questions or concerns they may have. I stay and hold space for the mother and partner in what ever capacity that is required in that moment.
What does Doula Support look like in the time of COVID-19?
The response to this questions relies heavily on your chosen care provider and birthing location. While there is a NY State mandate that permits birthing families access to supporting persons, not all hospitals are being cooperative. Proactive measures, such as early conversation with your care provider, obtaining copies of my certification, pre-registering with the hospital, etc. will help alleviate some of the hurdles that may be faced gaining entry on birthing day.
